AI in Schools
Anthropic outage and Chrome agent reshape Aussie Edu AI
Digital Attitudes, 7 July 2026
Winter break has schools quiet, so this week's Australian ed-tech story is being written by Anthropic. Twice on the upside, once on the downside.
Claude drops 22 minutes and Claude Code sign-in with it
Anthropic's status page recorded a claude.ai and Claude Code OAuth outage on the afternoon of 6 July Pacific time, which is Tuesday morning Melbourne. Downdetector counted more than 11,000 reports at the peak. A fix landed inside 22 minutes, but every Claude for Education tenant, including La Trobe's rolling 5,000 licence deployment, was locked out for the window. Any Claude Code job that tried to authenticate through the same OAuth path in that block failed.
Why this matters: universities pushing Claude to a whole of tenant footprint have concentrated identity risk on one provider. When Anthropic's OAuth loses air, the entire deployment loses air, including any coursework built around Claude Code in a CS classroom. Before Semester 2 kicks off, IT teams should map which academic sessions depend on Anthropic auth surviving a 30 minute wobble, and have a working answer for what students do while they wait. The record sits on Anthropic's status page and the sequence of degraded models is written up at MacRumors.
Claude for Chrome goes generally available on 1 July
On the first of the month Anthropic took Claude for Chrome out of research preview and shipped it to every paid Claude user, with free tier users able to use it inside their existing free limits. The extension reads the page the student is looking at, drafts responses in place, and can act on the page: click, fill, navigate. It works on any URL the user visits.
Why this matters: every AI acceptable use policy that treats "AI tools" as something students open in a separate tab needs a rewrite this month. Claude in Chrome sits inside the tab, including Canvas, Moodle, Cadmus, Turnitin's student portal, and the browser-only assessment platforms Australian universities have been steering open lane assessments toward all year. The two-lane frameworks Sydney and Melbourne stood up in 2025 assume a browser without a live agent doing the reading. That assumption expired last Tuesday. Anthropic's install page and permissions model sit at claude.com/claude-for-chrome.
Cyber Battle Australia's Grand Final hits Melbourne on 25 July
The Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre closes 2026 registrations this week and heads into the Grand Final on 25 July at SEEK's Melbourne headquarters. Qualifying teams meet for a six hour Capture the Flag exercise on a NATO awarded cyber range delivered by CTF Tech and CyberExer. Boot camps ran through ten cities across June, and the bulk of the entrants came out of VET, TAFE and undergraduate cohorts aged 18 and over.
Why this matters: this is the visible end of the pipeline TAFE NSW and Skills SA have been pouring money into all year, and one of the few national benchmarks Australia runs for entry level cyber talent. Employers complaining about the skills gap and hiring in the second half should be booking observation slots for the 25th, not filing another submission to the workforce plan. Registration and finals detail at the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre.
