Build a reusable class context block AI can use

Most of the time AI gives you a generic answer, the problem is not the model. It is you. You did not tell it who the class is. This prompt fixes that once, and every subsequent chat for that class gets sharper.

The prompt

Turn my class notes below into a reusable "CLASS CONTEXT" block I can paste at the start of any new AI chat about this class.

The class: [YEAR LEVEL, SUBJECT, CLASS CODE, GROUP SIZE, ANY SPLIT. e.g. "Year 9 Maths 9M, 24 students, three ability bands"]

Where they are in the unit: [CURRENT TOPIC, WEEK OF THE UNIT, WHAT THEY DID LAST LESSON, WHAT IS NEXT]

Known misconceptions and gaps: [TWO OR THREE THINGS THIS CLASS ROUTINELY GET WRONG OR ARRIVE WITHOUT]

Adjustments (anonymised): [INITIALS, NEED, ADJUSTMENT. e.g. "JM: EAL, provide word bank. LT: extension, offer open-ended task." NO full names, NO identifying detail]

Classroom conditions: [ROOM, RESOURCES YOU HAVE, RESOURCES YOU DO NOT, ANY BEHAVIOUR OR ROUTINE NOTES THAT MATTER]

Output preferences for this class: [REGISTER, WORKED-EXAMPLE STYLE, WHETHER TO INCLUDE ACARA V9.0 CODES OR VCAA STUDY-DESIGN DOT POINTS, TYPICAL LENGTH]

Instructions to you:
- Produce a single tightly formatted "CLASS CONTEXT" block, under 400 words.
- Use short paragraphs and bullet points, not prose.
- Do not add anything I did not write. If a field is missing or too vague to use, ask me one clarifying question before writing.
- End the block with exactly this line: "Use this context when responding. Do not restate it back to me."

What it does well

Forces the six pieces of context that actually change AI output for a class: year, unit position, misconceptions, adjustments, conditions, and how you want it to write. Once you have the block, paste it as the first message of any new chat and every subsequent prompt for that class benefits without you retyping it.

Where it falls over

The block is only as honest as your notes. If you write "students struggle with fractions" instead of naming which sub-skill (equivalence, adding unlike denominators, converting to decimals), the AI will hedge back at that same altitude. Also: this is context, not compliance. Do not paste student names or identifying detail, even in a chat you think is private.

Try it like this

For primary: include your seating pods, the phonics program you are on, and which students are on the tricky-words tier. The block then respects your routines when it drafts a lesson.

For VCE or VCE-VM: include the study-design dot points you are currently teaching, the SAC calendar for the term, and the two or three places students routinely lose marks. Every draft assessment then anchors to real criteria.

If you only have five minutes today: fill fields 1 and 3 only. Even a block with just year level, subject and the top misconceptions lifts every subsequent output. Add the rest across the term.

Once you have the block, save it. In ChatGPT, drop it into a Custom GPT's instructions. In Claude, paste it into a Project's system prompt. In Gemini, keep it as a saved gem. Then every new chat for that class starts already knowing who is in the room.
